MOUTH ULCERS –Stomatitis
A mouth ulcer is an open sore inside the oral cavity. Two common mouth ulcer types are apthous ulcers (canker sores) and cold sores (caused by the herpes simplex virus).
The types of oral ulcers are diverse, with a multitude of associated causes including: physical or chemical trauma, infection from micro organisms or viruses, medical conditions or medications, cancerous and sometimes non specific processes. Once formed, the ulcer may be maintained by inflammation and or secondary infection.
Causes for Mouth Ulcers
- Mouth ulcers are sometimes caused due to the damages that are caused accidentally while brushing of teeth. Minor burns also cause ulcers. Accidentally biting the inner portion of the mouth also causes ulcers. Apart from these rough tooth and braces are also responsible for causing ulcers. The ulcers last for a week but might stay longer if more damages are caused.
- Apart from the common mouth ulcer there is another ulcer known as apthous ulcer. Their appearances are related to the mental stress of the person. They have some connection with puberty and are hereditary. They tend to last for a couple of week and disappear also after the person is free from mental stress.
- These mouth ulcers tend to disappear only after the person is totally free from any type of mental stress and pressure. Sometimes these ulcers also caused due to the some bowel disturbances but when such ulcers are formed there are some other symptoms also. There are various other causes like iron and vitamin B12 deficiency which are responsible for causing mouth ulcers.
- These ulcers tend to get healed on their own but if they remain for more than a week or erupt regularly then the doctor should be contacted with out fail. Food allergies ate also responsible for the eruption of mouth ulcers. Thus we see that there are various reasons for the appearance of the ulcers. Some drugs also cause mouth ulcers.


Prevention
In the case of physical damage – there is not much one can do to prevent it, except by obvious things such as; avoiding sharp foods, having sharp or chipped teeth smoothed off, or wearing a bite splint.
For ulcers caused by an allergic reaction or auto-immune system response to chemical or biological agents – prevention is difficult as it is very hard to isolate the agents responsible, especially as it can take a number of days between cause and visible effect.
