What is CBT – Cognitive Behavior Therapy ?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy, also called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT, is a form of psychological therapy. Over recent years many research studies have shown CBT to be the most effective treatment for many psychological problems. For this reason CBT is sometimes referred to as “evidence-based psychology” or “evidence-based practice”, as in most cases the therapy techniques have been proven to be effective by research evidence.

CBT addresses the emotions, behavior, thoughts, and beliefs behind psychological difficulties.  Unlike many counselling approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on teaching individuals practical techniques to manage and overcome their psychological problems.  Many different techniques are utilized depending on the types of problems a person is experiencing.  Some examples of these techniques include: training in recognizing and challenging negative thoughts and beliefs, desensitization techniques, relaxation therapy, training in problem-solving approaches, etc.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) Who is it for?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been found to be an effective treatment for many psychological problems, such as depression, generalized, panic attacks, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, anger control problems, body image disorders, specific phobias, trauma or abuse reactions, insomnia and many other psychological problems.  CBT is also commonly used to help individuals with chronic pain, adjustment difficulties following the diagnosis of major illnesses or other life changes, irritable bowel syndrome, weight management, etc.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)  – How long is therapy?

CBT is usually a short term treatment.  Many individuals overcome their problems or experience significant improvements within 6 to 10 hours of therapy.  However the number of sessions required will depend upon your circumstances.  Your treating professional may be able to provide an estimate of treatment duration following an initial assessment interview.

Who provides CBT?

Psychologists have expertise in Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

What about medication?

For many people Cognitive Behavior Therapy alone is sufficient to address their problems.   However some people may require a combination of CBT and medication.  This is something they should discuss with their General Practitioner or specialist if they are consulting one.
